Tests and Job Descriptions for Staff Members

If you're interested in helping us working on scanlation, here's your chance! Pick your desired position, do the test, and send us your application! Experience is not needed, as long as you can pass the test.

Job Descriptions and Tests:

Japanese Translator
Your work is to translate Japanese manga/doujinshi -- from cover to cover (including sfx and author's note) -- into English. You don't have to be native speakers, as we have proofreaders to check for your translations; knowledge of both Japanese and English languages, however, is a must.

Chinese Translator
Your work is to translate Chinese doujinshi -- from cover to cover (including sfx and author's note) -- into English. You don't have to be native speakers, as we have proofreaders to check for your translations; knowledge of both Chinese and English languages, however, is a must.

*The test is courtesy of Pink Yellow (a Chinese Scanlation Group). Please translate Page 3 - 12. Don't forget to put down all the details (such as, page numbers, the characters' names, the text positions, etc.), so it'll be easy to understand. Save the document to .doc, .docx or .rtf format.


Japanese-English Proofreader
Your work is to check the translations provided by our translators to maintain the translation's accuracy. You have to crosscheck the translation with the RAW scans, correct translation mistakes and add the untranslated lines (in case our translators forget to translate them). You must have a good grasp on both Japanese and English languages in order to be a proofreader (perfection in grammar is not a must).

English-English Proofreader
Your job is to make sure that every dialog and sentence flow nicely in English. You have to add proper punctuations, correct grammatical errors, find equivalent words/idioms that can replace odd sentences and keep the spelling consistent (American or British). You must be a native speaker and have a good grasp of grammar.

Cleaner/Re-drawer
Your job is to clean the RAW scans from sfxes, texts, dialogs, dirts, etc. Cropping, leveling, resizing, removing gutter shadows, taking care of dots, blurs, and the previous page's art that can be seen through, combining the two pages-spreadsheet and redrawing the necessary parts are part of your job. Don't forget to adjust colours for coloured images. You have to be advanced in using Photoshop program to be a Cleaner/Re-drawer.

*Please clean the RAW scans and combine page 'spreadsheet 1' and 'spreadsheet 2' into one big image. The results should be like this example: Download


Typesetter
Your job is to insert every texts available on the script into the .PSD provided by the cleaner. Be creative and make sure all the texts match the original Japanese version. You have to be familiar with Photoshop program in order to become a Typesetter.

*Please typeset the texts according to the script and save the file into .TIFF (make sure all the layers are still editable).


Quality Controller
Your job is to make sure that the final scans are free from mistakes. Check for grammatical errors, awkward sentences, misplaced commas, typos, missing punctuations. Check for uncleaned sfxes, untranslated texts, blank bubbles, missing texts/sfxes. Check for dirts and dull colours. Change weird fonts, make sure the texts are consistent. Redraw the parts missed by the cleaner (or notify the cleaner). Make sure the sizes are correct (1500px width for new projects, and 850 width for old ones).

Fix the leveling (too much level will make the scans too black/lose the details. Not enough level will make the scans look dirty/not crisply b/w. Make sure the texts are in diamond shape and avoid to break a word in the middle. See example:

Save all the files to .PNG. Quality Controllers should be really picky and detailed, especially with punctuation, so that the final results will be free of errors. Knowledge of Photoshop and English is required.

*Please fix all the errors (see the long description above). Compare the RAW and the typeset scans (the RAW scans is included in the PSD layer). For missing translations, just mark them with XXX, and save the files to .PNG.


Reviewer
Your job is to review the beta releases (a first reader). You have to be extremely nitpicky and detailed. You must spot errors that are left by the QCer before the releases are made for public. You must be a native speaker and perfect with English grammar to fix awkward sentences. You don't have to be able to clean or typeset. Your job is only to spot errors and notify the QCer, so that the QCer can fix them. You have to check if there's a missing page, too.

PDF Converter
Your job is to convert the final files from Quality Controller into PDF without losing quality. You must have the full version of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro (or the slightly older versions).
